Short answer
Confirm whether the Mac actually slept or the transfer merely stopped. For an idle-sleep problem, keep the lid open and use a temporary Keep Awake session. If the transfer stops while the Mac is awake, investigate the connection and downloader rather than extending the timer repeatedly.
Identify the event that interrupted the transfer
Record what happened immediately before the download paused: inactivity, closing the lid, disconnecting a dock or losing Wi-Fi. These events can affect different parts of the transfer. A browser showing no progress does not prove the operating system entered sleep, and a display turning off is not the same thing as the whole Mac sleeping.
| Observation | Next check |
|---|---|
| Stops after inactivity | Idle-sleep behavior and awake-session status |
| Stops when lid closes | Use the described workflow with the lid open |
| Stops while actively working | Connection, source server and downloading app |
| Stops after unplugging | Power, dock and network changes |
Run one bounded test
- Use a non-sensitive download with visible progress.
- Keep the MacBook lid open and use a suitable power source for the task.
- Open NotchPop Keep Awake and select a duration longer than the expected transfer.
- Leave the download running, then return to check the downloader's own completion status.
The display can be controlled separately from system idle sleep. Read the active-session header rather than assuming a button press worked. Do not close the browser or terminate the relevant app during the test; the awake session cannot continue a task after its owner stops it.
Check the result and restore normal behavior
If the download completed, verify the actual file instead of relying solely on a progress percentage. If it failed while the machine remained awake, record any browser error or source-server response. Retrying on a stable connection is more informative than using an indefinite session without addressing the transfer error.
Turn Keep Awake off after the test. For tasks whose duration you cannot predict, app-based mode may be convenient, but it follows the app being open rather than the download finishing. Use a countdown reminder to check back and avoid leaving an unnecessary session active.
