Short answer

Add files to NotchPop's Drop Shelf, select the intended entries and choose AirDrop. macOS handles the recipient and transfer flow. The shelf stages your selection; it does not make an unavailable device appear or confirm delivery on the recipient's behalf.

Stage one handoff at a time

A shelf is convenient when the files you want to send are scattered between Downloads, a project folder and another app. Collect those files before opening the sharing sheet. Keep unrelated documents out of the working selection so you can verify a small, understandable batch.

Start with a harmless local file when testing a new device combination. The source must still be available: an entry pointing to a disconnected drive or moved file is not an independent backup. Use Show in Finder if similarly named entries make the actual source unclear.

Select and send deliberately

  1. Drag the files onto the island and choose Keep, or use Add files… in Shelf.
  2. Select entries using their selection circles, Command-click or Shift-click. Check the count.
  3. Choose AirDrop to open the system sharing interaction.
  4. Choose the intended recipient and complete the system flow. Confirm the files reached the receiving device before clearing the working list.

Selection and delivery are separate stages. Three selected entries can still be the wrong three files. Open a document first when its name is not enough to identify the approved version, and keep private materials out of a demonstration batch.

Troubleshoot the right stage

If the item never reaches Shelf, test Add files… to isolate the drop interaction. If the item is present but AirDrop cannot find a recipient, inspect the receiving device and macOS sharing flow. Repeatedly adding the same file creates clutter without resolving device discovery.

For a recipient that needs a different image format, convert and inspect the output before sending. The HEIC-to-JPG guide covers that step. After a verified transfer, Remove from Shelf removes the tray entry; file organization and deleting originals remain separate Finder tasks. The shelf overview explains the rest of the staging workflow.
